Who Knows Hukou?
媒体来源: 中国法律博客

Apparently Jeremy Goldkorn, or at least his sources. Danwei has an interesting post on the dismantling of the Yunnan hukou system:

The Yunnan government has announced that beginning on January 1 of next year, Yunnan province will eliminate the current hukou registration system that essentially binds rural Yunnanese to their officially registered place of residence.

This is a bit of a coincidence since I was just talking about this subject last night. I asked my wife "Why haven't I even heard the word hukou in at least two years? Doesn't anyone deal with the hukou system any more?" She scowled at me and told me to stop asking stupid legal questions at home. I guess I deserved that.

Anyway, Yunnan's situation is more evidence that all of this is being phased out. Some day all I will have are fond memories of interviewing young lawyers and asking them "Do you have a Beijing hukou?" and "Which danwei has your personal file?"
