The International Crisis Group (Crisis Group) is an
independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, with some 135 staff
members on five continents, working through field-based analysis and high-level
advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly conflict worldwide. Crisis Group is
seeking an Analyst to work
mostly in Beijing.

ANALYST

Role:

Reporting
to the China Adviser/North East Asia Project Director, and liaising closely
with other research and advocacy staff in the organization, the successful
candidate will develop and enhance Crisis Group’s research capabilities as they
relate to the role of China in conflict prevention and resolution issues in the
region and around the world.

Responsibilities:

· Conduct
extensive research into Chinese foreign policy, particularly as it relates to conflict
issues around the world;

· Write
at least three detailed reports per year, setting out relevant research
findings and policy recommendations, exploring appropriate means of alleviating
the underlying causes of tension and conflict;

· Brief
the China Adviser/North East Asia Project Director and other Crisis Group staff
on developments in China,
and work closely with Program and Project Directors to assist them with
research and provide input to Crisis Group publications as required;

· Explain
and advocate Crisis Group recommendations with Chinese and foreign
government representatives, and NGO, INGO and media representatives;

· Work
closely with Crisis Group’s New York
office to monitor Chinese positions on issues covered by the UN Security
Council and other UN bodies;

· Develop
ties with other researchers in and elsewhere looking at China's growing role around the world, particularly in relation to conflict;

· Develop
ties with officials of the Chinese government to maintain a dialogue on conflict related issues in the
region and around the world, particularly in Africa and the Middle
East

Requirements:

· Fluent
English and Mandarin Chinese;

· Experience
of working in China
that includes contact with the government;

· Considerable
knowledge of Chinese foreign policy issues as well as experience in international
policy analysis, security policy analysis and conflict prevention; 

· At least five years professional
experience working in government, academia, international organisations, NGOs
or journalism;

· PhD
or Masters degree in international relations, political science, journalism,
sociology, a related field, or equivalent through experience;

· Excellent
writing, editing and analytical skills and ability to formulate well-targeted
policy recommendations;

· Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills, including good public presentation
skills, a strong capacity for effective teamwork, as well as the ability to
work independently; and

· Ability
to work in a fast-paced, often demanding environment.
