In spite of my Southern California upbringing, I'm not a car person. Don't own one, don't want one, don't miss them.
China's fascination with autos has been troubling to me on many levels. Let me count the ways:
1. Environmental effects
2. Growing lobbying power of the auto industry
3. Demise of the pedestrian/bicycle culture
4. Siphoning of government resources
5. Related issues (e.g. fuel price policy)
Today I found another item to add to my list: auto shows.
I never really understood why someone would go to a convention center and look at cars, most of which look pretty much the same as last year's models.
Once in a while you can see a cool looking concept car or nifty new technology, but as long as I read Wired magazine on a regular basis, I'll get all that info anyway.
I think most attendees secretly agree with me, which explains why these auto companies hire so many skanky young girls to strut their stuff in front of the new cars.
So, back to my complaint. There is apparently an auto show taking place as I write – in Guangzhou. My Inbox is full of related stories, an incredible number of them. I literally have over 100 auto show-related items that I had to wade through.
You want to know how many of those were substantive articles and how many were links to pics of auto show chicks? Probably about even, 50/50. I also appreciate the headlines (e.g. "Toyota Show Girls," "Volkswagen Show Girls," — you get the idea).
Someone please explain to me what the attraction is.
