Many Southerners look down on Dongbei food and consider it unrefined.
But that may be more a measure of China’s culinary wealth than of the quality of Dongbei food. Over the last five years, at least five Dongbei restaurants have opened in Flushing, Queens, providing some particularly enticing entry points to the cuisine[.]
I like to consider myself an honorary Dongbeiren by marriage, and for whatever reason, it's my favorite regional cuisine. Nice to know that it's appreciated by folks in New York, or at least the Dongbei diaspora living in Queens.
"Our food is as good as anywhere else in China," said David Liang, the pugnacious owner of Hong Yi Shun in Flushing, who is from the port city of Dalian[.]
You tell 'em, bubba. And don't take no shit from them Southerners.
