Customs officers at the Lok Ma Chau control point today seized 86 boxes containing more than 1 million duty-not-paid cigarettes and the lorry they were in and arrested the 47-year-old driver.
They discovered the cigarettes during an X-ray inspection of the lorry at about 6:45am. They are worth about $2.6 million with a duty potential of about $1.8 million.
Smuggling is a serious offence that carries a maximum penalty of a $2 million fine and seven years in prison.
