Two men, aged 36 and 23, were sentenced at the Tsuen Wan Magistracy today to four and six months' jail for smuggling ivory tusks and worked ivory, the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department said.
Customs officers yesterday seized 95.4 kg of ivory tusks and worked ivory in their check-in baggage at the airport.
The case was referred to the department and it immediately instituted prosecution against them.
Importing, exporting, re-exporting or possessing any endangered species without a licence are offences. Any person found guilty is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million, two years in prison, and mandatory forfeiture of the specimens.
