Visitors to the Correctional Services Department's 60th annual autumn fair in Stanley today were in for a treat: For $100 a plate, they could sample meals served to inmates, at a first-ever Charity Canteen.

Patrons had a choice of four meals, including curry and vegetarian offerings, served up on prison-issue tableware, in a replica of an institution canteen – behind bars.

Inmates entertained fair goers through a dragon dance, marching band and African drum team performances. Most of them had not had music or dance backgrounds. With intensive training and their officers’ and tutors’ guidance, the inmates mastered the skills – and wowed the crowds.

Inmates also crafted the items for sale at the fair, including metal and wood handicrafts and limited edition souvenirs.

The funds raised will be distributed to more than 40 volunteer groups and charities, including those that provide inmates’ welfare services.
