The new $3.5 billion Fire Services Training School in Pak Shing Kok, Tseung Kwan O, will be completed in October 2015.

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam, Secretary for Security TK Lai, Director of Fire Services Chan Chor-kam, and Director of Architectural Services Leung Koon-kee officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the 158,000 square metre site today.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Lam said the existing Fire Services Training School in Pat Heung is now more than 40 years old and can no longer meet the department's training needs.

"The new school will definitely enhance the expertise of rescue personnel. The quality training of our elite fire fighters and ambulance staff will help them offer the best services to the public and make Hong Kong a safer place to live and work."

There will be outdoor and indoor simulation training facilities for various complex and large-scale emergency scenarios, to better equip trainees with fire-fighting and rescue techniques.

The simulators mainly cover seven types of emergencies related to buildings, transport, marine and water, gas, aircraft, hazardous materials, and structural collapse. The school will also provide driver training for fire vehicles.

It will have an education centre to promote and disseminate knowledge on fire protection, evacuation, and first aid. A display area will show the department's history and exhibit fire services uniforms from different periods and fire service installations, equipment and tools.
