The Department of Justice does not and will not allow any form of interference in prosecution work because the rule of law is the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s success as a safe, fair and just community.

This was the message from Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen today, speaking at the opening ceremony of Prosecution Week 2013.

He said prosecution decisions are always made and taken forward in a fair, independent and objective manner, and cases will only be proceeded with by way of prosecution if it is in the public interest to do so.

Prosecutions are handled in accordance with the Statement of the Prosecution Policy & Practice, established policy guidelines, and only cases with a reasonable prospect of successful conviction are placed before the court.

The theme for the event this year is "ROLE", for "Rule of Law Enforced". Its purpose is to promote community awareness of the rule of law in the context of the criminal justice system as well as to emphasise the role citizens can play in furthering the interest of criminal justice.

Prosecution Week 2013 runs until June 28, during which activities including guided visits to the Prosecutions Division, the Jockey Club Drug InfoCentre, and the High Court will be held, along with school talks on criminal law, and photo and poster competitions.

The Fire Services Department received 750,000 calls for fire services, special services and emergency ambulance services last year, a reflection of the growing public demand for its services, Permanent Secretary for Security Joshua Law said today.

He commended the fire and ambulance staff for their professionalism, devotion and firm commitment in serving the community at a passing-out parade for 14 station officers, nine firefighters and 22 ambulancemen at the Fire Services Training School.

He said construction works for the new Fire Services Training School at Pak Shing Kok are under way, to provide more effective and sophisticated training for fire and ambulance staff.

"There will be outdoor and indoor simulation training facilities in the new school for various complex and large-scale emergency scenarios, to better equip trainees with fire-fighting and rescue skills. The school will also provide in-service training for graduates to enhance their professional ability," he said.

The graduates gave a demonstration of fire-fighting and rescue techniques after the parade, which marked their successful completion of 26 weeks of training.
