Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen says Hong Kong can become a centre for dispute resolution in the Asia-Pacific region.

He told the media today 40 companies and organisations, including banks and insurance companies, have signed the ‘Mediate First’ pledge, helping to create a mediation culture in Hong Kong.

The pledge promotes a change of thinking and attitude so mediation can be used to resolve disputes instead of legal action, he said.

In response to criticism of Financial Secretary John Tsang, Mr Yuen said it is normal for people to have different views on financial management. He said he believes Mr Tsang has his own philosophy on financial matters, and the Basic Law has laid down criteria and guidance which the Government must follow.

On the Edward Snowden case, he said Hong Kong has all along acted in accordance with its laws and the extradition agreement signed with the US. He said he understands the US may have a different opinion, but it must respect the laws of Hong Kong.
