(Hong Kong) A fire broke out in a tenement building on Canton Road in Yau Ma Tei last night (15th), causing at least seven deaths. It is known that the fire-related unit on the first floor was used to operate a Nepalese restaurant and a birthday party was held at the time of the incident.
Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) said that the restaurant did not hold a food business licence and was operating illegally. The FEHD said today (16th) that according to records, the above premises did not hold a valid food business license issued by the department. The Department received a complaint in April last year that the premises on the first floor involved suspected an unlicensed food business and sent staff to the premises to conduct follow-up investigations, but no unlicensed food business was found. Since then, the department has not received any complaints. According to the department, it will pay attention to the conditions of the relevant premises and take appropriate actions.
