The second best-selling category is auto parts and accessories and the third concerns health and beauty products. The information was revealed in eBay's virtual news briefing yesterday.
"The pandemic is driving online shopping with more efforts to draw interest of global consumers. This has pushed up the exponential growth of the global e-commerce market," said Rinlita Srirojpinyo, head of marketing of eBay Thailand, during the event.
She said the company has become aware of three trends in online retail commerce.
The first lies in healthy living items with more people purchasing products that make them happy at home, such as toys, video game equipment, luxury items and sneakers.
The second involves express delivery as users do not want to wait long to receive their products. They are willing to pay higher prices for express delivery, compared with before the pandemic when they focussed more on low-cost delivery.
"We see Thais making an adjustment by selling products in sets that can fetch higher prices while facing a high cost for express delivery services," said Ms Rinlita.
The third trend concerns new technology adoption. For example, many Thai sellers embrace application programming interface (API) to facilitate their product postings through multiple webs at the same time.
This year, eBay will attach more importance to customer services, product category expansion and eBay Managed Payment (MP), she said.
Thailand is seen as a country of sellers on eBay with only 5% of transactions in the country coming from buyers based in Thailand, she said.
According to Ms Rinlita, the company has its system ready for the new e-service tax law, which will kick off at the beginning of next month. She said value-added tax of 7% will be collected from sale commission fees.
In 2021, the five most popular items from Thailand sold via eBay are motorcycle parts, fine jewellery, loose diamonds, hair care and styling and decorative plants. All are in high demand in the US, UK and Australian markets. Gross merchandise volume for each item is growing faster than 30% year-on-year.
eBay also launched the "eBay NextGen" project, which offers privileges and benefits for new sellers, which include immediate approval to sell in best-seller categories, free advertising fees and advice on using overseas warehouses.
