Customs officers have seized 74,200 illicit cigarettes worth about $740,000 and arrested three men, aged 24 to 30.

The officers raided three cross-boundary private cars at Tin Shui Wai and Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday where they found the cigarettes. They had a duty potential of $126,600. Officers also seized the three cars and three others that had been used for storage, collection and distribution of the smuggled cigarettes.

Investigations triggered the raids after Customs discovered a syndicate frequently used cross-boundary private cars to smuggle the cigarettes into Hong Kong from the Mainland. They were then delivered to carparks in Tin Shui Wai for temporary storage in the private cars pending collection and distribution by other private cars.

Report any suspected illicit cigarette activities to Customs’ 24-hour hotline, 2545 6182.
