Police are investigating a traffic accident in Shau Kei Wan today, in which three men died and 56 people were injured. Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung says the Transport Department has asked the bus company to submit a report on the accident.
It happened at about 11.40am when a bus driven by a 57-year-old man crashed into a taxi and another bus on Chai Wan Road near A Kung Ngam Road.
The taxi was crushed between the two buses. The 53-year-old taxi driver and his two male passengers, aged 30 and 34, had to be cut free by firemen. They were sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital where they were certified dead.
The two bus drivers, and their 23 male and 31 female passengers, aged from seven months to 90 years old, were sent to multiple hospitals.
Speaking to media, Prof Cheung expressed condolences to the victims’ families. He said the location is not a traffic accident blackspot, and the department has sent officers to investigate the scene and see whether any immediate remedial measures are required.
Bus drivers aged 50 or more must undergo annual health checks to ensure they are fit to drive, he said.
"In cases that any driver who feels physically in a poor condition, the driver should inform the bus company, and the company should make necessary arrangements to make sure the driver driving the bus is fit."
The bus driver has been arrested for dangerous driving causing death and has been released on bail.
Witnesses should call Police on 3661 1620.
