The Police will implement road closures and diversions in Kowloon and on Hong Kong Island on New Year's Eve, and ask people to obey officers\u2019 directions and not to break the law.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Traffic control arrangements for December 31 were announced today. Road closures involving Hung Hom Bypass, Nathan and Canton Roads will start from 8pm in Tsim Sha Tsui, and later extend to Kowloon Park Drive, Star Ferry Bus Terminus and Austin Road.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The East Point Road pedestrian area will be closed at 4pm, the first road to close in Causeway Bay. Closures will extend to other roads including Great George and Paterson Streets, depending on pedestrian traffic.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter Bay's lay-bys will close at 9pm, to clear the way for the Jardine Midnight salute.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Police expect crowds celebrating outside this year to be similar in number to last year, when about 312,000 people partied outside on Kowloon side and 62,000 people on Hong Kong Island. Traffic congestion is expected and people are urged to use public transit. Drivers are reminded not to drive after having alcoholic drinks or drugs.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Maritime transport will also be tightly regulated due to the fireworks display scheduled for midnight. A restricted area will be set up from 1pm outside the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Marine Department will step up vessel inspections, to ensure they have sufficient lifesaving equipment, that children wear life jackets throughout the journey, and to ensure their is a list of the crew and passengers.<\/p>\n
