Customs officers have arrested two truck drivers after seizing $2.8 million worth of illicit cigarettes with a duty potential of about $1.9 million.

 

Officers checked the truck at Lok Ma Chau Control Point at about 6am today, and found 1.1 million duty-not-paid cigarettes concealed in it. It was declared to have 386 boxes of ironware and plastic products on board.

 

The male driver of the lorry, aged 35, and the 41-year-old male driver of another lorry who was waiting to collect the cigarettes, were arrested.

The Security Bureau today lowered the Outbound Travel Alert for Israel from red to amber.

 

Hong Kong residents who intend to visit the country, or who are already there, should monitor the situation and exercise caution. They should avoid all travel to Gaza and surrounding areas.

 

The bureau said it will monitor the situation and issue updates through the media and its webpage.
