Police urge people to use the 999 hotline service for emergencies only, as misuse wastes operators' time and delays the handling of genuine emergencies, endangering the lives of people at risk.
Police Regional Command & Control Centres received almost 2.26 million calls in 2012, of which only 52.2% were genuine. The rest were nuisance calls or misdialled.
