The Government has proposed a 76.8% rise in jurors' allowances to $725 per day, an 8.3% increase to $445 for ordinary witnesses, and a 2.6% rise to $2,415 per day for expert witnesses.

The proposed increases, which were gazetted today, aim to maintain the real value of allowance rates to minimise the financial loss to those serving or testifying in court. The adjustments are based on the mechanism approved by the Legislative Council Finance Committee and refined recently.

Three legislative amendments to increase the rates of allowances for jurors and witnesses in criminal proceedings and coroners' inquests will be tabled at the Legislative Council on February 11 and March 18.

The revised rates will take effect on a date the Chief Justice specifies, pending legislative scrutiny.

Gambian nationals must apply for a visa to enter Hong Kong for all purposes, including those in transit, from February 12, the Immigration Department announced today.

Gambians can presently visit Hong Kong visa-free for up to 90 days.

The department reviews its visa policy constantly to make necessary changes that circumstances warrant, and to ensure a proper balance between facilitating genuine visitors and safeguarding immigration control.

It reminds Hong Kong SAR passport holders that a visa is also required for them to enter Gambia and they should check the latest visa requirements before visiting the country.

At present, nationals of about 170 countries and territories can visit Hong Kong visa-free for up to 180 days.
