Police will implement crowd management controls and special traffic arrangements to facilitate public order events to be held on July 1, including a public meeting at Victoria Park, a procession from the park to Central, and another public meeting in Central.

At a press briefing today, Hong Kong Island Senior Superintendent (Operations) Tse Kwok-wai said the public meeting in Victoria Park will be held at 1pm at the six football pitches there.

The procession is to commence at 3pm, but will set off when meeting participants and those awaiting the start of the procession have occupied about 85% of the football pitches area.

In anticipation of a large number of participants, Police have urged the event marshals to work with their officers to facilitate the arriving crowd's orderly access to the venue for the meeting and the procession.

Participants are advised to be patient and adhere to arrangements made by the organiser and Police instructions on site.

Organisations wishing to set up street stations should apply for relevant licences from the concerned government departments.

They should also ensure their street stations will not cause unreasonable obstruction to the procession, nor endanger the procession's safety or that of other road users.

The Fire Services Department carried out 28 safety inspections on public entertainment venues yesterday, amid concerns over the use of flammable powder following an incident in Taiwan.

Hundreds were injured during an event in Taiwan yesterday when a coloured powder ignited after being sprayed onto the crowd.

Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Tsang Wing-hung reminded event organisers during a press conference today to strictly observe fire safety requirements, adding that officers had not found flammable powder being used at the venues.

Mr Tsang stressed that the inspections will continue.

He noted that a licence is required to stage public entertainment events and the department will issue fire safety requirements and advice to the applicants.

An application has been made for an event at Asia World Expo next month, which listed the use of coloured spray paint as one of the highlights, but Mr Tsang said the organiser had confirmed at a meeting today that no flammable powder would be used.

The department will formulate appropriate fire safety requirements for the organiser to implement before issuing a fire safety certificate for the event, he added.

The Immigration Department today sent officers to Taiwan to help Hong Kong people injured in last night's fire in New Taipei City.

The department has contacted the families of the injured and will assist according to their wishes and situation.

It will continue contact with HKETCO and the families to monitor the situation and offer any aid required.

Hong Kong residents needing help when abroad can call the department's 24-hour hotline (852)1868.
