The total number of reported drug abusers fell 11% year-on-year to 2,972 in the first quarter of the year, while the number of reported drug abusers aged under 21 dropped 25% to 224 people.

Action Committee Against Narcotics Chairman Ben Cheung announced the figures today, saying they show drug use in Hong Kong continues to decline.

The number of new drug users decreased 2% to 547 and the number of people under 21 getting hooked on drugs fell 12% to 121.

Heroin is still the most commonly abused drug in Hong Kong, while ketamine is the most common psychotropic substance abused. Despite this, the number of heroin users fell 5% and ketamine users dropped 19%.

"Although the number of reported drug abusers has declined, we will not slacken our anti-drug efforts in view of the long drug history of newly reported cases," Mr Cheung said.

"In light of the serious health damage which psychotropic substances could inflict on drug abusers, the problem of hidden drug abuse remains an issue of concern."

The committee will continue to step up publicity to arouse public awareness of the drug problem, he added.

Police have arrested a driver after his car reportedly struck and killed a 74-year-old man in Sheung Shui this morning.

The accident happened on Ching Hiu Road at about 9.45am. The driver was approaching Ching Ho Estate when he reportedly knocked down the senior who was crossing the road.

He was sent to North District Hospital, where he later died.

The 21-year-old driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death.

Immigration officers have arrested 18 illegal workers and their three employers in an anti-illegal work crackdown.

They raided 15 locations including restaurants, stalls, a factory and units under renovation on June 17 and 18.

Nine of the suspects were arrested for breaching their conditions of stay by being involved in parallel trading in Lok Ma Chau.

The department reminded employers not to hire illegal workers and warned visitors not to take up employment in Hong Kong without permission from the Director of Immigration.

Skytrax said the plaudits were based on 13 million survey questionnaires collected between May 2014 and January 2015 from air passengers representing 112 nationalities, covering 550 airports worldwide.
