The Police Dog Unit has launched a new programme for police puppies which is expected to shorten their formal training time.

Police Dog Unit Chief Inspector James Lee told reporters today it now has 13 puppies born to police dogs, which will be trained after a year and a half, when they have grown larger.

Before entering formal training, the puppies will be sent to different Police districts when they are six-months-old and will be taken care of by dog handlers, he said.

The programme is designed to ensure puppies bred by the unit receive the appropriate care and necessary training to develop a sound working temperament.

An 85-year-old woman was killed and a 54-year-old truck driver arrested for dangerous driving causing death in a Yuen Long traffic accident. 

At about 5.30am, the truck was turning into Fau Tsoi Street from Hop Choi Street when it struck the woman as she was crossing the road.

She was sent to Tuen Mun Hospital where she was certified dead.

The 54-year-old male driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death.

Customs officers arrested a lorry driver after finding 610,000 illicit cigarettes in his vehicle at Lok Ma Chau Control Point on July 15.

The haul was valued at $1.7 million with a duty potential of $1.2 million.

Officers inspected the lorry, declared to be carrying electronic parts, shoes and furniture, and found the cigarettes inside 25 mattresses.

The 39-year-old male driver was arrested and his lorry was seized.

Police have arrested a light goods driver after his vehicle reportedly struck and killed a pedestrian in Tin Shui Wai last night.

The accident happened on Tin Shui Road at around 9.30pm, as a 54-year-old woman was crossing the road near Tin Yat light rail station.

She was sent to Tuen Mun Hospital where she later died.

The 42-year-old driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death.
