A police officer fired four shots and was run over by a van during a theft incident in Hung Hom this morning.

He noticed a man, aged 20 to 30, stealing newspapers on Man Tai Street at about 5am and boarding a van. A woman aged about 18 was also on board.

He intercepted them as they fled and made repeated warnings for them to stop. A struggle ensued and the officer was pushed from the van and run over by it on Chatham Road South.

The suspects fled towards Yau Ma Tei and the officer was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with leg injuries.
